The mentoring movement is coming to full bloom through the growth of school-based mentoring. Today more than 30% of mentoring programs in the United States are in local schools. With mounting evidence that school-based mentoring works β students with mentors in school show increased rates of attendance, academic achievement and school connectedness β more and more school districts see the value of volunteer mentors in their classrooms. MentorMap, another YouthFriends solution, has been helping communities and school districts implement and grow successful school-based mentoring efforts for the past six years. Its National School-Based Mentoring and Volunteerism Conference - 4th Edition, held biennially in Kansas City, draws mentoring professionals, educators, community leaders, researchers and funders from the across the country and abroad. Seasoned veterans as well as those new to the field, come to learn, to network, to re-energize and share best practices. And they are not disappointed. General Sessions featuring an array of nationally recognized thought leaders and breakout forums led by professionals and colleagues in the field provide a fertile environment. Itβs a time to cultivate fresh ideas and informed perspectives about the blossoming field of school-based mentoring β the place for professionals to grow.
